Home interiors is more than a billion dollar market in India today. However the sector still remains quite an unorganized one. Till few years back, Interior Designing in India was more restricted towards basic necessities at home (Wardrobes, Kitchen, Basic Furnishing and Painting). With limited education towards home interiors and low income levels of the user groups, the emphasis was more on creating a basic structure for living
Thanks to the booming IT & Manufacturing Sector in the country today, the income levels of the Indian society have steadily grown over the last few years. This has resulted in a boom in the home realty sector & hence an ever increasing demand for Home Interiors.
Home Interiors is now a Lifestyle rather than just basic necessities & defines an Individuals Taste and Personality. The expectation of the User Group has gone much higher in last couple of Years. Interiors are a thing of Beauty and Status Symbol than just bare necessities. With growing needs of the industry a huge number of new design companies/Freelancers are mushrooming almost every day and calling them as Home Interior Experts. All these companies are coming up with new and unique strategies to pitch in the client by giving great Sales and Marketing talks but are not able to deliver what is promised on time and in full due to : a)Restricted design & execution exposures & b)Huge dependence on third parties for the entire project cycle (which Includes Design/Project Management & Execution). Home Interiors is a very technical domain and needs a lot of subject knowledge and expertise to offer the right solutions to the Clients. Designing a Home needs years of experience which is not to be seen in any of the companies which have mushroomed in last 4-5 years. They are more of Business Groups targeting on capturing the market size and hence increasing the profits for the investors. However none are able to offer Client Satisfaction, which is tremendously low in the Home Interior segment. Home Interior is still mis-conceived by most of the people as wood-works and furnishing, which it is not.. Home interiors is mix of multiple elements which need to be all curated to give that desired home which clients always want while signing up with any company/freelancer. However most of the companies are themselves not equipped to offer these as they have limited knowledge. Mostly these companies are dependent on images from the net ( which they use to create fancy 3D models) to lure the clients, however have no idea how to convert these designs into reality. To convert designs into reality not only do they need to have a lot of product knowledge but also they should be experts at execution. Executing the design as shown on 3D is a major shortfall for 99% companies in India today. Execution is an art and needs to be done by the right people. Due to lack of execution knowledge there is a huge gap between the initial design as promised to the client and the final output. Most of the Companies insist clients for doing factory execution giving different benefits and hence asking clients to use laminate which can be easily executed. Material Knowledge is also a very important subject matter for Interior firms. With so many material option in the market, the clients are mostly not exposed to them due to the following 2 reasons: a) Lack of Knowledge by the consulting company: This is primarily as most of these firms do not upgrade them and are themselves not aware of products. Designers/Executioners have limited knowledge and exposure. b) Companies Business Interest: Most of the companies for scaling purposes only recommend products which are easily execution-able ( Like Laminate work) and helps them scale their business ( Laminate work can be done faster, does not need a lot of involvement and hence can help them scale) . But these products are very old & basic & do not offer anything great to achieve the desired look and feel. Finding the Right Company / Consultant is the key for the End User, else it can become an Very Horrifying and an Expensive Experience. Saurabh Vijay
